As we head into fall, it's time to think about an important Medicare milestone: the Annual Enrollment Period. If you're on Medicare, this is your chance to review your coverage and make changes if your needs have shifted, or if there will be changes to your current plan that you don’t like.

Who's Really on the Other End of That Medicare Call?

The phone rings. The voice on the other end says your name, your age, and your address. It sounds official. It may even sound friendly. And within a minute, you are being asked to confirm your Medicare number. What do you do?

Complaints about Medicare-related scam calls have climbed sharply over the past year. Reports to the Better Business Bureau indicate that these kinds of calls remain a major concern for people Medicare. Some have even described getting dozens of these calls in a single day. Enrollment season tends to make it worse, because legitimate outreach picks up at the same time criminals do.

Here is how these calls tend to sound, and how to protect yourself.

The Three Pitches You Are Most Likely to Hear

Many Medicare scam calls follow similar scripts. Once you recognize a few key patterns, the calls lose a lot of their power.

          "You qualify for extra benefits"

A recorded voice says it is reaching out to make sure you receive unclaimed Medicare benefits. The recording asks whether you have Part A and Part B, then transfers you to a live person. The real goal is either to get your personal information or to switch you to a plan you did not ask for.

          "Your card is expiring"

The caller warns that your Medicare card is about to expire, or that your coverage could be interrupted unless you verify a few details. Fear and urgency are the strategy here. If you hand over your Medicare number or Social Security number, criminals can use it to steal your identity or bill you for services you never received.

"Something free is on the way"

Free braces. Free hearing aids. Free gift cards or a free smartphone. The offered gift is bait. One woman in Texas received a large box of orthopedic braces she never ordered, and later learned Medicare had been billed more than $700 for them. Her secondary insurer was charged as well, and additional claims were filed for supplies she never requested.

Fraudulent claims can also leave inaccurate information in your medical records, including diagnoses for conditions you do not have.

Fake Agents Are Part of the Problem

Not every scammer sounds like a robot. Some present themselves as licensed insurance agents. They may reference a well-known carrier, quote a plan name, or offer to walk you through your options right now over the phone.

A few things a real agent will not do:

Pressure you to decide something during a first call

Refuse to give you a full name, license number, or office phone number

Ask you to pay by gift card, wire transfer, or a payment app

Tell you that you must act today or lose your coverage

Show up at your door uninvited to sell you a plan

Verifying an agent is simpler than most people expect. Ask for their name and license number, then hang up and call the agency's main office number yourself. You can also check the license with your state Department of Insurance. Anyone who is legitimate will not mind you doing this; they know you need to be careful.

Remember that Medicare generally reaches out by mail first and does not call to ask for your Medicare number or banking information

Hanging up may feel rude, but it is the single most effective thing you can do.

Act quickly, but do not panic. Write down what you shared and when. Review your recent statements. Then report it. You can contact the Senior Medicare Patrol program in your state, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

You have a number you can call to ask whether an offer is real before you respond to it.

How the Metal Levels Work and How to Choose the Right One

When you shop for coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace, every plan is sorted into one of four categories, often called "metal levels": Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. A fifth category, Catastrophic, is available to some people. If the names make it sound like a ranking from worst to best, that is worth clearing up right away.

What the Metal Levels Actually Mean

The metal levels have nothing to do with the quality of care you receive. According to HealthCare.gov, the categories are based on one thing: how you and your plan split the costs of your care.

Each level reflects the average share of covered costs the plan is designed to pay versus the share you pay. Here is how those shares break down, based on the official estimates from HealthCare.gov:

Bronze: The plan pays about 60% and you pay about 40%. Deductibles are generally high. Monthly premiums are generally lower.

Silver: The plan pays about 70% and you pay about 30%. Deductibles are generally moderate. Monthly premiums are moderate.

Gold: The plan pays about 80% and you pay about 20%. Deductibles are generally low. Monthly premiums are higher.

Platinum: The plan pays about 90% and you pay about 10%. Deductibles are generally low. Monthly premiums are the highest.

These percentages are averages across a large group of people, not a promise about any single medical bill. The general trade-off holds across every level: lower monthly premiums tend to come with higher costs when you actually need care, and higher premiums tend to come with lower costs at the point of care.

A Closer Look at Each Tier

Bronze plans carry the lowest monthly premiums and the highest out-of-pocket costs. They tend to suit people who are generally healthy, expect few medical needs during the year, and mainly want protection against a major or unexpected event.

Silver plans sit in the middle on both premiums and out-of-pocket costs. They also carry a feature that sets them apart, which we cover later on.

Gold plans have higher monthly premiums but lower costs when you use care. They can be a strong fit if you visit providers often, take regular medications, or expect ongoing treatment.

Platinum plans have the highest premiums and the lowest costs at the point of care. They tend to make financial sense mainly for people who know they will use a significant amount of care. Platinum plans are not offered in every area.

The Coverage Is the Same Across Every Level

Here is a point that surprises many shoppers. No matter which metal level you choose, every Marketplace plan must cover the same set of 10 essential health benefits. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services lists these categories as:

Ambulatory patient services, meaning outpatient care

All plans also cover recommended preventive services at no cost to you when you use a provider in your plan's network. Specific covered services can vary somewhat by state and plan, so it is always worth reviewing a plan's Summary of Benefits and Coverage before you enroll.

Why Silver Plans Deserve Extra Attention

Silver plans come with a benefit the other levels do not offer. If your income qualifies you for cost-sharing reductions, sometimes called "extra savings," you can only receive them by enrolling in a Silver plan.

These savings lower what you pay for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. For those who qualify, a Silver plan's share of costs can rise well above the standard 70%, reaching as high as 96% depending on your income. In practical terms, that means a Silver plan can deliver Gold or Platinum level cost protection while keeping a Silver level premium.

Two Kinds of Savings, and How They Differ

Some people qualify for financial assistance when shopping for Marketplace plans, and that help comes in two forms.

The premium tax credit lowers your monthly premium. You can apply it to a plan in any metal level if you qualify.

Cost-sharing reductions lower your out-of-pocket costs when you get care. These apply only to Silver plans.

If you think you might qualify for financial assistance, give us a call. We can help you understand your savings options. You can also find out whether you qualify for either type of help when you complete your Marketplace application.

          What About Catastrophic Plans?

Catastrophic coverage is a fifth option available to a narrower group: people under 30, and people 30 or older who qualify for a hardship or affordability exemption. These plans feature very low premiums and very high deductibles, and they still cover the same 10 essential health benefits. New for the 2026 plan year, HealthCare.gov notes that more plans, including Bronze and Catastrophic options, can be paired with a Health Savings Account so you can set aside pre-tax money for qualified medical expenses.

How to Pick the Level That Fits Your Situation

Choosing well comes down to looking past the premium and thinking about your total yearly spending. A few questions to work through:

How much care do you realistically expect this year, including doctor visits, prescriptions, and any planned procedures?

Could you comfortably cover a high deductible if something unexpected happened?

Do you qualify for a premium tax credit, cost-sharing reductions, or both?

If you expect minimal care and want the lowest monthly cost, a Bronze plan may fit. If you want a balance, or you qualify for extra savings, Silver is often the better value. If you use care frequently, Gold or Platinum can lower what you pay when it counts. Remember that the cheapest premium is not always the cheapest plan once you add in what you might pay when you actually need care.

Why Getting Older Might Make You Happier, and How to Borrow the Secret Now

Research on aging and happiness keeps turning up the same surprising pattern. Here's what the science actually shows, and how to apply it at any age.

The Happiness Story Isn’t What You Grew Up Hearing

For decades, researchers described happiness across a lifetime as a U-shape: high in youth, dipping through the so-called midlife crisis, then climbing back up in your later years. Newer research is complicating that tidy picture, but one finding keeps holding up: older adults consistently report strong emotional well-being, often stronger than people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. The interesting part isn’t the shape of the curve. It’s why it happens.

It’s Not About Having Fewer Problems

Older adults aren’t happier because life gets easier. Health concerns, loss, and physical limitations tend to increase with age, not decrease. Researchers who study this, including psychologist Laura Carstensen’s work on socioemotional selectivity, point to something different: as people become more aware that time is limited, they naturally shift their attention and energy toward what matters most. Priorities narrow. Petty conflicts matter less. Meaningful relationships and present-moment experiences move to the front of the line.

Older Adults Get Better at Managing Their Emotions

Multiple studies point to something researchers call the positivity effect. Compared with younger adults, older adults tend to pay less attention to negative information, recover faster from stress, and hold onto positive memories more readily. This isn’t denial. It’s a learned skill, built from decades of practice regulating emotions and choosing what to focus on.

Relationships Get Deeper, Not Just Fewer

Research on aging consistently links close relationships with spouses, adult children, and friends to higher happiness in later life. But it’s not about the number of relationships. Older adults tend to trim their social circles and invest more deeply in the handful of relationships that genuinely matter to them. That shift toward quality over quantity shows up again and again as a strong predictor of well-being.

Three Lessons You Can Borrow at Any Age

          Trim your circle on purpose.

You don’t need more friends. You need a few relationships you actually invest in.

          Practice noticing the good.

Older adults don’t ignore hard things, they’ve just built the habit of also registering what’s going right. That habit can start at any age.

Ask what actually matters before your calendar fills up.

You don’t need to wait until later in life to prioritize the people and activities that matter most to you.

Older Adults Also Tend to Compare Themselves Less

Younger adults often measure their lives against a moving target: a coworker’s promotion, a friend’s new house, a stranger’s highlight reel online. Researchers have found that this kind of social comparison tends to fade with age. Older adults are more likely to judge their lives against their own values and history rather than against other people. That shift alone removes a major source of everyday dissatisfaction, and it’s a habit you can start practicing well before you retire.

A Word of Caution About the Research

It’s worth being honest that this is an active area of study, and researchers don’t all agree on the details. Some recent analyses challenge the classic U-shaped curve entirely, arguing that once you control for survey biases, happiness looks more like a slow decline with a small uptick around the early 60s, followed by a steeper drop in very old age tied to health decline. Other work still finds strong support for a late-life rebound. What almost none of the research disputes is the core idea: older adults, as a group, tend to report meaningfully higher emotional well-being and life satisfaction than middle-aged adults, even while facing more physical limitations. The mechanism, not the existence of the pattern, is what’s still being debated.

It’s Never Too Early to Start

The research is still evolving, and no single study has the final word on exactly how happiness moves across a life. But the underlying lesson holds regardless of the exact curve: emotional well-being isn’t just a matter of circumstance. It’s shaped by where you put your attention and who you choose to spend your time with. Those are habits worth building now, whatever age you’re starting from, and they tend to compound the same way good financial habits do.

Every fall, if you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan, you'll receive an important piece of mail: the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC. Many people glance at the envelope, assume it's routine paperwork, and tuck it away in a drawer, but this is a letter worth reviewing.

Your ANOC is your plan's official preview of what will change starting January 1 of the coming year. By law, plans must deliver it to you no later than September 30 each year, which gives you time to review it before Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15. Inside, you'll typically find details about premiums, drug coverage, copayments and coinsurance, provider networks, and any coverage changes starting January 1.

Why This Letter Deserves Your Attention

Many people assume that if you've been happy with your plan all year, then you don’t need to do anything and nothing will change. But Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are permitted to adjust their costs and coverage from one year to the next. The monthly premium might go up or down, a medication you've taken for years may move to a different cost tier or no longer be covered at all, or prior approval may now be required. A doctor or specialist you see regularly may no longer be part of the plan's network.

These changes do not require your permission and can significantly impact your coverage. Reviewing your ANOC carefully gives you a critical head start, allowing you to identify specific concerns or areas to address, such as network or formulary changes, before annual enrollment arrives. This ensures that when it comes time to sit down with us after October 1 for your Medicare review, you and your agent can focus on evaluating the aspects of your plan that you already know need your attention.

          What Can Actually Change

The ANOC covers more ground than most people expect. Along with monthly premiums and annual deductibles, it can outline new copayment or coinsurance amounts for doctor visits, specialist care, and hospital stays. It will also show whether your medications have moved to a different cost tier, been removed from the formulary altogether, or gained a new requirement like prior authorization or step therapy. Provider and pharmacy networks can change, too, meaning a doctor or pharmacy you rely on today might not be included next year. Even the maximum amount you'd pay out of pocket in a year, and benefits like dental, vision, or hearing can be adjusted, expanded, or reduced. The plan may even add new, additional supplemental benefits in the coming year.

          A Quick Example

Consider a longtime Medicare Advantage enrollee named Margaret, who was satisfied with her plan, didn’t open her ANOC, and let her enrollment automatically renew during annual enrollment. It wasn’t until January that she realized her monthly premium had gone up slightly, and more importantly, a maintenance medication she'd taken for years had moved to a higher cost tier. She also discovered that one of her regular specialists was no longer in the plan's network. Had she caught these changes in October, she would have had time to compare plans and talk with a licensed agent before the Annual Enrollment Period closed. But now she was locked into her plan for the rest of the year.

What to Do When Your ANOC Arrives

The envelope will likely be marked with something like "Important Plan Information” or may be labeled “Annual Notice of Change.” Open it and read through the entire letter. Many ANOCs include a side-by-side comparison of this year's plan details versus next year's. Pay close attention to four things in particular: your premium, your specific medications, the providers you see most often, and the benefits you use most or expect to use in the coming year. If anything has changed in a way that concerns you, that's your cue to explore other options. Starting on October 1, you can work with one of our licensed insurance agents to compare plans and prepare for Annual Enrollment from October 15 - December 7.

          Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistake is simply not opening the envelope, and assuming that because nothing has gone wrong this year, nothing will change next year. Another is reading only the first page and missing details buried further in, such as formulary or network changes. Some people miss the window and open it too late to take action during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7. Others focus solely on the premium and overlook drug coverage or network changes, which can end up costing far more over the course of a year.

Your ANOC may look like just another piece of mail, but it's one of the most useful documents Medicare sends you all year. Reading it carefully, checking your premium, your medications, and your providers, and comparing your options can help you make sure you’ve got a plan that truly fits your needs. Don't throw it away, and don't let it sit unopened. A little attention each fall can go a long way toward protecting your healthcare and your budget in the year ahead.

Why Working With a Licensed Insurance Agent Still Matters

Buying insurance online is fast, but a licensed agent can help you compare carriers, understand the fine print, and advocate for you at claim time.

The Value of a Trusted Advisor in an AI-Centered World

Today, the word "agent" has taken on a new meaning. In an era of instant gratification, getting an insurance quote online or using an AI agent to collect quotes for you has never been easier. With a few simple commands or clicks, you can secure a price in minutes, and in many cases, enroll in a health insurance plan. However, while speed and convenience are undeniable benefits, there is a critical distinction between buying the cheapest or most visible policy and buying the right policy for you. That difference is where a licensed independent insurance agent adds real value. And we mean a human agent. Instant quotes can give you quick and useful information; what they can't do is tell you whether it's actually the right fit for your family, your health, your lifestyle, or your budget.

A Personalized Look at Your Needs

Whether you're shopping for health insurance, property insurance, or something else, a good insurance agent doesn't start with a product; they start with a conversation. What are your healthcare needs? Do you have children? Are you nearing retirement? Those answers shape a recommendation built around your actual circumstances, rather than a generic set of coverage limits generated by an online form. This personalized needs assessment often reveals gaps you might not have considered.

Access to Compare Multiple Carriers Objectively

Many independent agents maintain relationships with a range of carriers. That means they're not tied to selling one company's policies, but they can pull quotes and coverage details from multiple sources and lay them side by side for you. You get a broader view of what's available, along with an explanation of how the coverage, not just the cost, differs from one option to the next. That kind of objective comparison is difficult to get by shopping company by company on your own.

          Help Understanding the Fine Print

Insurance policies are dense with terminology: exclusions, endorsements, riders, and sublimits, to name just a few. An agent can walk you through what your policy actually covers, what it doesn't, and why certain terms exist, in plain language you can understand. It is far better to understand an exclusion or a term of coverage before you need to rely on your policy, rather than discovering a limitation while in the midst of a crisis.

An Advocate When You Need to File a Claim

Filing a claim can be stressful, especially if a major event or emergency has occurred. An agent who knows your policy and your history can help you understand what documentation you'll need, what to expect from the process, and who to contact with questions along the way. Having someone in your corner who can help you navigate that process, rather than facing an unfamiliar claims system entirely on your own, is one of the most valued parts of working with an agent.

          Ongoing Reviews as Life Changes

Your insurance needs at twenty-five look very different from your needs at forty-five or sixty-five. Getting married, having children, buying a home, starting a business, or heading into retirement can all shift what kind of coverage makes sense. A good agent doesn't just sell a policy and disappear; they check in over time, often around renewals or major life events, to see whether your coverage still fits. That kind of ongoing relationship helps make sure your policies keep pace with your life, rather than staying frozen at whatever made sense years earlier.

          A Local, Accountable Relationship

There's also something to be said for having a real person to call, someone local who knows your name, your history, and your household, rather than an anonymous chat window. That kind of relationship builds accountability. An agent who lives in your community and has an ongoing relationship with you has a stake in your long-term satisfaction, not just in closing a single sale. And best of all, in the majority of cases, agents are compensated through a commission paid by the insurance carrier, built into the overall cost of the policy, rather than through a separate fee charged to you. So you get the added advantage without any added cost.

          The Bottom Line

A licensed agent can't promise the lowest possible price or a guaranteed outcome every time, and it's worth being cautious of anyone who claims otherwise. What an agent can do is take the time to understand your needs, compare your options, explain the details in plain language, and stand beside you when it matters most, at claim time and as your life changes. Reach out to our team today to get unbiased and experience guidance for your insurance needs.

For many, the ability to earn a paycheck is their most valuable financial asset. Yet most of us insure our cars, homes, and even our phones long before we think to insure our income.

According to the Social Security Administration, about one in four of today's 20-year-old workers will experience some kind of disability, either short-term or long-term, before reaching retirement. And per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about 35% of private industry workers have access to employer-sponsored disability coverage. That leaves the majority of American workers, and their families, without a financial safety net for a significant risk.

Health insurance covers medical bills, but it doesn't cover your mortgage, your groceries, your car payment, or your kids' tuition if you find yourself unable to work. That's where disability insurance steps in.

          What Disability Insurance Actually Does

Disability insurance replaces a percentage of your pre-disability income if you're unable to work due to illness or injury. This is why it is also commonly called

          income protection.

It helps you keep paying the bills, maintain your standard of living, and protect long-term goals like retirement savings or your children's education.

There are two main types of policies to consider:

           Short-term disability coverage

typically replaces a portion of your income for a few months while you recover from a covered illness or injury.

           Long-term disability coverage

kicks in after short-term benefits end and may continue for years, depending on the policy.

          Integrated short- and long-term coverage

is an option that combines both into a single, coordinated plan. The right kind for you depends on your income, savings, dependents, and existing employer benefits.

Two Key Protection Features to Understand

When comparing policies, two terms come up frequently:

          Non-cancelable.

The insurance company cannot cancel your policy, raise your premium, or reduce your benefits as long as you keep paying your premium. This is often considered the strongest form of policy protection.

          Guaranteed renewable.

The insurer can't cancel your policy and must continue your benefits, but the company may raise premiums over time, typically across policyholders rather than individually.

Both kinds offer meaningful protection. The right choice depends on how much premium stability matters to you.

          Common Policy Options and Riders

Beyond the base policy, you can often customize coverage with optional features called "riders." Here are some of the most useful ones to know about:

           Additional purchase option:

Lets you buy more coverage later, often without a new medical exam.

           Coordination of benefits:

Sets a target benefit amount across all your income-replacement sources. The policy makes up any difference not paid by other coverage.

           Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA):

Increases your benefit over time based on changes in the Consumer Price Index. This helps your benefit keep pace with inflation, though it usually comes with a higher premium.

           Residual or partial disability rider:

Allows you to return to work part-time, earn partial wages, and still receive a partial benefit while you continue to recover.

           Return of premium:

Refunds a portion of your premiums if you don't file a claim during a specified period. Terms vary by policy.

           Waiver of premium:

Pauses your premium payments once you've been disabled for a set waiting period, often 90 days, so your coverage continues without out-of-pocket cost while you're unable to work.

          Don’t Put it Off

Disability insurance is about planning for a worst-case scenario so you feel prepared for just about anything. It's about protecting the life you've worked hard to build, so that a setback doesn't become a financial crisis. Whether you're early in your career, raising a family, or approaching retirement, having the right combination of short- and long-term coverage can help you focus on getting better instead of worrying about how to pay the bills.

Every situation is different. A licensed insurance professional can help you compare options, understand the fine print, and find coverage that fits your budget and your needs.

          Safe Travel Starts at Home

Travel is one of life's greatest joys. Whether you're planning a weekend road trip or a long-awaited international adventure, the excitement of setting off somewhere new is hard to beat. But the best trips are the ones where the surprises are good ones. A little preparation before you leave home, especially when it comes to your health coverage, can mean the difference between a smooth journey and a stressful one.

Here's how to set yourself up for a healthy, worry-free trip.

          1. Know What Your Health Plan Covers — and Where

Before you book anything, take a few minutes to review your health insurance coverage in the context of your destination.

If you have an individual health plan, check whether your insurer's network extends to where you're traveling. Some plans only cover in-network or in-state providers, while others include broader emergency coverage.

If you're on Medicare, here's what you need to know: Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may include emergency and urgent coverage abroad, but this varies by provider. Check your plan’s Evidence of Coverage or speak to your plan provider before traveling.

If you have questions about your coverage, we can help review your policy and fill any gaps before you travel.

          2. Consider Supplemental Travel Coverage

If your existing coverage has gaps, there are several supplemental options worth exploring:

           International Travel Insurance

covers emergency care during trips outside the U.S. and is generally affordable for short-term travel. Look for plans with medical evacuation coverage.

           Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

            — certain Medigap plans cover foreign travel emergency care up to plan limits, generally after a deductible. If you have a Medigap policy, check your plan details to see if foreign travel emergency coverage is included.

We can help you sort through your options and find coverage that fits your trip.

          3. Smart Packing: What to Bring on the Plane

When it comes to medications and medical devices, one rule applies: keep them with you. Always pack prescriptions, medical devices, and essential health supplies in your carry-on bag — never in checked luggage. Bags get delayed or lost, and being without critical medications can turn a vacation into a medical emergency.

A few things to know before you reach the airport:

           Medications:

Bring enough for your full trip plus a few extra days. Keep medications in their original labeled pharmacy containers when possible because it speeds up TSA screening and reduces customs questions.

           Medical devices:

CPAP machines, nebulizers, insulin pumps, and similar devices are permitted on most flights, but it is wise to carry a physician's letter explaining your need for the device. If you use a portable oxygen concentrator, notify your airline at least 48 hours in advance, as most carriers require it.

           Implanted devices:

Carry your device identification card and inform TSA officers before screening if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or similar device.

For specific questions, visit tsa.gov or call the TSA Cares helpline before your trip.

          4. Have Easy Access to Your Medical Information

A health emergency is stressful enough without having to scramble for basic information. Before you leave, put together a simple travel health packet that includes:

           Your insurance and/or Medicare cards

Emergency contact numbers, including country codes for international travel

A current medication list with dosages

A summary of any allergies or significant medical conditions. If you are traveling somewhere English isn't widely spoken, consider having it translated.

Keep the originals in a waterproof sleeve in your bag and leave a copy with someone you trust back home.

          5. Take Care of Preventive Health Before You Go

Most insurance plans cover preventive care at no additional cost, so use it. Before your trip, make sure you're current on vaccinations, including flu, COVID-19, and tetanus. For international travel, check the CDC's destination-specific recommendations, which may include Hepatitis A or B, typhoid, yellow fever, or other vaccines depending on your destination.

          6. Protect Yourself from Health-Related Fraud

Travelers are frequent targets for scams, and health information is no exception.

If you're a Medicare beneficiary, guard your Medicare number the same way you'd protect a credit card.

Only share Medicare or insurance information on official websites or with verified agents.

When you return home, watch your Explanation of Benefits for any claims you don't recognize.

          7. Have an Emergency Preparedness Plan

A little research can go a long way if something goes wrong. Before you arrive at your destination:

Identify the nearest hospital or urgent care facility, confirm whether they accept your insurance, and understand the process if you need medical evacuation.

Know the medical emergency phone number at your destination. What is the equivalent of calling 9-1-1?

In international locations, remember that you may encounter language barriers, unfamiliar billing practices, and different standards of care. The U.S. Embassy or Consulate at your destination can often provide referrals to local English-speaking physicians and hospitals.

          8. Keep Your Body in Good Shape Along the Way

It's very easy to leave good habits behind when you head out on a trip, but taking care of your body is important for a good vacation.

           Move regularly:

Stretch and walk every few hours, especially on long flights or car rides.

           Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Drink plenty of water to counter the effects of extra activities, extra sun, and extra food and drink.

           Eat balanced meals:

Meals on the go tend to lack a healthy dose of fiber, which can lead to digestive distress. Be sure to seek out veggies and whole grains, and consider bringing a fiber supplement with you.

           Rest:

Fatigue lowers immunity. Don't skip on sleep.

           Keep germs at bay:

Use hand sanitizer, wash your hands frequently, and consider wearing a mask on crowded airplanes or mass transit.

          Conclusion

A great trip starts long before you leave home. By reviewing your coverage, filling any gaps, organizing your health information, and taking a few smart precautions, you can travel with real confidence. Whether you're hiking the Rockies or relaxing on a beach abroad, being prepared means your focus stays where it belongs — on the adventure ahead.

          Safe travels!

A Practical Guide to Knowing Where to Go

It's Saturday afternoon. Your child takes a tumble at the park and his knee is swelling up. Your regular doctor's office is closed. The emergency room sounds like overkill. The urgent care across town is open, but you're not sure if it can handle this kind of thing.

Moments like these are exactly when knowing your options pays off, both for your peace of mind and your wallet.

It Matters More Than Most People Realize

Where you go for care can have a dramatic impact on what you pay. According to multiple healthcare cost trackers, the average emergency room visit can run anywhere from $1,200 to $3,000 or more, and copays are still typically several hundred dollars. Meanwhile, an average urgent care visit typically lands in the $100 to $250 range for the same kind of non-emergency issue, and copays for urgent care visits can be as low as $50.

           Research has also suggested that

30% to 50% of emergency room patients could have been treated effectively at an urgent care center

, often at a fraction of the cost. That's not just a financial issue. ER overcrowding can mean longer waits for people experiencing true life-threatening emergencies.

The lesson here is that choosing the right "door" for the right situation isn't just about money. It's about getting the best care.

          What Urgent Care Does Well

Urgent care centers are designed for the gray zone: situations that need attention quickly, but aren't true emergencies. Most centers can:

Treat common illnesses like colds, flu, strep, and stomach bugs

Handle minor injuries such as sprains, mild burns, and shallow cuts

Perform basic X-rays, lab work, and rapid tests

Provide sports physicals, work physicals, and travel vaccines

Manage straightforward conditions outside regular business hours

For relatively healthy people with a one-off issue, it's often a great fit.

When Urgent Care May Not Fit

Urgent care has a few limitations that are important to keep in mind:

           Complex or chronic conditions.

Urgent care providers don't typically have access to your full medical history. For ongoing or complicated issues, your primary doctor is in a better position to connect the dots.

           Severe or unusual symptoms.

If something feels seriously wrong, the ER has the equipment, imaging, and specialists urgent care doesn't.

Older adults and people with significant medical histories.

When an urgent care provider is meeting you for the first time, there’s a higher risk that they could miss a previous diagnosis or a medication interaction.

           Routine preventive care.

Annual physicals, screenings, and care plans are best handled by a primary care provider who can track your health over time.

A useful rule of thumb: urgent care is great for episodes, while primary care is built for patterns.

          A Decision Framework

When you need medical support, you usually have four options to consider. Here's a rough framework:

          1. Call 911 or go straight to the ER if:

Symptoms suggest a heart attack, stroke, or major trauma

There's uncontrollable bleeding, difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, or loss of consciousness

A serious injury to the head, spine, or possible broken bones with deformity

A child has a high fever that doesn’t come down after giving over-the-counter fever reducing medications

When in doubt, the ER is still your fallback plan. No financial concern is worth risking a life-threatening situation.

          2. Visit urgent care if:

You're dealing with minor cuts, sprains, infections, sore throats, ear pain, rashes, urinary symptoms, or low-grade fevers

The issue is non-life-threatening but can't wait for a regular appointment

Your primary care office is closed or fully booked

          3. Try telehealth or a virtual visit if:

Symptoms are relatively mild and don't require physical examination

You need a prescription refill, a quick consultation, or guidance on whether to seek further care

Your insurance plan includes it as a covered benefit

          4. Call your primary care provider if:

The issue isn't urgent and can wait

You're managing a chronic condition or need ongoing care

You want continuity, meaning a provider who knows your full health history

Many primary care offices reserve same-day slots for sick visits, so a quick phone call to your doctor's office is often a smart first step before heading anywhere else.

          A Few Insurance-Specific Tips

This is where a little preparation can save real money:

           Know what's in-network.

Both urgent care centers and ERs can be in or out of network, and out-of-network care typically costs more. Check your insurance card, member portal, or call the number on the back of your card to confirm before you go, when time allows.

           Understand your copays.

Look at the back of your insurance card or your benefits summary. Many plans list separate copays for primary care, specialist, urgent care, ER, and telehealth visits.

           Ask about facility fees.

Hospital-based urgent care centers, and freestanding ERs that look like urgent cares, may bill at higher rates than independent urgent care clinics. When in doubt, ask before you're seen.

           Don't skip the after-visit summary.

If you go to urgent care, request a summary of your visit and share it with your primary care provider.

           Use telehealth when it fits.

Many plans offer telehealth benefits at little to no out-of-pocket cost. It's worth checking what's included in your coverage.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

The best time to figure out your options isn't in the middle of an emergency. Before you need care:

Identify two or three in-network urgent care centers near your home and workplace

Save your insurance plan's nurse hotline or telehealth number in your phone

Know your primary care provider's after-hours protocol

Keep a list of your medications and allergies somewhere easy to grab

A few minutes of preparation now can save a lot of stress and poor decisions later.

          Conclusion

Used wisely, urgent care is a fast, affordable bridge between your doctor's office and the emergency room. Knowing which door to walk through in different situations is one of the most practical health skills you can build.

Specifically, each additional 12-ounce serving of fruit juice was associated with a 24% increased risk. Watch the sugar content of iced coffee beverages and alcoholic cocktails as well.

It's essential to note that high soft drink consumption often correlates with other unhealthy lifestyle choices. The IARC study observed that individuals who drank more soft drinks typically had higher body mass indexes and were more likely to smoke. Even after adjusting for factors like diet, physical activity, smoking, and education, the association between soft drink consumption and increased mortality risk remained significant.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long-awaited international adventure, setting off on a trip is always exciting—but can also be unpredictable. That’s why preparing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to your health, is essential. Knowing what your medical coverage includes (and doesn’t) while traveling can help you stay healthy, avoid costly surprises, and soak up the unforgettable moments on your journey.

Let’s walk through some proactive steps you can take before packing your bags—from vaccinations and insurance to emergency planning and fraud protection.

          1. Know What Your Health Plan Covers—And Where

Medical surprises aren’t on anyone’s itinerary—but it’s best to be prepared. Start by knowing how your insurance policy covers (or doesn’t) the region you’re traveling to.

          Individual health policyholders,

review your insurer’s network coverage. Some plans only cover in-network or state-specific services, while others offer broader emergency coverage or travel-specific riders. Consult your insurance agent to get help reviewing your policy.

          Medicare beneficiaries,

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may include emergency and urgent coverage abroad, but this varies by provider. Check your plan’s

          Evidence of Coverage

or speak to your plan representative before traveling.

          2. Consider Supplemental Insurance

If you're a frequent traveler or heading abroad, look into some options to help cover you. Some options include:

           Travel Medical Insurance

: Plans offer emergency coverage during trips outside the U.S. and tend to be affordable.

           Evacuation Insurance

: This covers transport to a qualified medical facility if the nearest care is inadequate. An evacuation clause is often, but not always, included in a travel insurance plan.

           Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

: Some Medigap policies cover emergency care abroad, typically up to plan limits and with a deductible.

           Critical Illness Insurance

: A lump-sum payout can provide financial flexibility in case you’re diagnosed with a covered condition like a heart attack or stroke during travel.

Be sure to read the fine print—some policies require you to be under a certain age, and preexisting conditions may not be covered. Your licensed insurance agent can help talk you through your options.

          3. Keep Your Medical Info Handy

Imagine getting a call in the middle of the night from someone claiming to be your grandchild, panicked and in trouble. They say they’ve been in an accident or arrested—and they desperately need money. Your heart races. You’d do anything to help. That’s exactly what scammers are counting on.

          What Is the Grandparent Scam?

These scams usually start with a phone call from someone pretending to be your grandchild (or another close relative). They’ll say they’re in trouble—maybe stuck in jail or in a hospital—and they need money fast for bail, legal fees, or emergency expenses.

To make things even more convincing, they may hand the phone off to someone pretending to be a lawyer or a police officer. And they’ll likely ask you

to tell anyone—saying it’s a “private” or “sensitive” situation.

That sense of urgency is key to the scam. It’s meant to bypass your instinct to double-check and make you act fast—before you have time to think it through or talk to someone else.

These calls often come late at night or early in the morning, when you’re more likely to be caught off guard. The scammer might not even say who they are—just “Grandma, it’s me”—and hope you fill in the blank for them. From there, they use that information to sound more convincing.

Some victims have been asked to send money via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or even in cash via courier—all methods that are difficult or impossible to trace or reverse. According to the FCC, scammers using this method have stolen
